What is the difference between physiotherapy and a supervised exercise class?
They are not rivals. Rehab gets someone moving; a regular class makes sure they keep moving.
| One-to-one physiotherapy | Screened group class | |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Diagnose and treat a problem | Maintain and build strength, balance, stamina |
| Who is it for | Injury, surgery, stroke, acute pain | Stable adults, or those who finished rehab |
| Format | One person, tailored hands-on or video plan | Live batch of six, cameras on |
| Frequency | Per episode of care | Three or more days a week, ongoing |
| Progress | Clinical goals | Attendance, sit-to-stand, balance holds, weekly report |
When should my parent see a physiotherapist before starting exercise?
- Recent fracture, joint replacement (within three months) or other surgery.
- Stroke in the past six months.
- Unexplained pain, swelling or giving way in a joint.
- Falls without warning, or new dizziness.
- Cardiac event, chest pain not yet investigated, or blood pressure above 180/110. These need a doctor first.
How does physiotherapist screening work at Vayayam?
Before the first class a registered physiotherapist (MPT, Orthopaedics) holds a 20-minute assessment with the member. They ask about conditions, medicines, falls and goals, observe movement, and classify the person as accepted, needs clearance from the doctor first, or not right for the programme. For accepted members they write a short protocol for the coach: what to avoid, how to modify, and what to watch for.
We decline people when the programme is not right and say so plainly. Often one-to-one physiotherapy is the correct next step.
Is online physiotherapy effective for elderly people?
For assessment, education and guided exercise, video can work well, especially for follow-ups and for families who are far away. It cannot replace hands-on treatment, imaging or a doctor’s examination when those are needed. Ask any online provider for the therapist’s registration and how they escalate if something is wrong.
Common questions
Does Vayayam provide physiotherapy treatment?
No. Vayayam is a supervised group exercise programme. A registered physiotherapist screens every member and writes a safety protocol, but classes are not diagnosis, treatment or rehabilitation.
Can my parent do group exercise after physiotherapy?
Often yes, and it is a good way to keep the gains. The Vayayam physiotherapist will say on the assessment call whether your parent is ready.
What qualifications do the Vayayam physiotherapists and coaches have?
Screening is done by a registered physiotherapist (MPT Orthopaedics). Classes are led by certified senior fitness coaches.
Is a doctor’s note needed?
If the physiotherapist classifies someone as needing clearance, we ask for the doctor’s go-ahead before the first class.
